Pepper Sphere

Fall 2018

This is a 10” in diameter sphere made from cardboard and tape. Here I combine my practice of drawing with techniques of construction explored in “Dome”. For me, drawing is an action of
the hand and not the mind as I often draw with a lack of processing what I am drawing, instead just letting visual information flow to my hand. Yet the action of sculpture through cardboard requires calculation and so I was forced to negotiate between these two actions. “Pepper Sphere” also explored the relationship between the three and two-dimensionality of the
object I created and the actual pepper itself, examining the limits of representation. Each square drawing on the sphere’s surface was an observational representation of a pepper (a basic
mundane object) seen from an angle corresponding to the position on the sphere which it was pasted. There are 18 drawings in total. In creating the piece I am wondering to what extent I have created a pepper.
